Week 73 — Birthdays, birthdays, birthdays
- Abby and I had Friday off last week to do some life admin things. Before we did though, we stopped for a coffee at the local shops which was super lovely and quiet on a week day :)
- I spent a couple of days in Melbourne this week to celebrate some birthdays and work milestones. The birthday celebrations involved hanging out with family and eating lots of food, and the work celebration involved hanging out in VR and playing some arcade games. I have to say, VR gaming was pretty neat! I don’t think I’d want to do it for more than 20 minutes at a time, but I can now see the appeal. We played some of the games at Zero Latency as a team, which involved all of us in the same game, able to see interact and communicate with each other. I had no idea what to expect going in, but the way they designed the game was really smart. There were lots of tight corridors so you weren’t able to run around in any direction, but instead navigate the confines of the maze, occasionally running in to an opponent and having a small firefight. After 15 minutes, I did start to feel a bit of nausea because the frame rate of the game was kinda low, and lagged a bit behind my heads movement, but bounced back pretty quickly!
- Alex and I checked out then new MTG Bloomburrow decks this weekend too. I’ve really been digging the necromancer-squirrel one that I tried. I’m not a huge fan of some of the commander mechanics that fire off on every action, but the ones we tried were only doing things and the start or end of certain steps, which was much easier to keen track of! Also the art is super cute!
- I also caught up with one of my oldest pals (of ~30 years or so) and met his newest kiddo which was incredibly lovely. We only get to see each other every so often with my infrequent trips to Melbourne with enough of a gap to catchup, but it's so heartwarming that we're able to just catchup where we left off each time as if the gap of ~12 months each time was a matter of days.
