Week notes 76 — Back to work for '25

  • This week was my first week back at work since parental leave!
  • I'm so glad I took ~10 weeks off work! Not only was it really nice to get to spend a lot of time with Sebastian, but to also be able to take on half the load of getting in to a new routine. By week 4, we were still a wreck, and it would have been really hard to either go back to work and leave all of the baby things to Abby, or to go to work and to also support with the many many things that needed doing in the early days of us working out how we want to manage things.
  • It was also nice to have some space around baby things to also do more life things. We caught up with a bunch of friends and family, went for coffee during the day, on a week day, organised some renovation things.
  • Amongst all the above I got to do some small programming things to make my small Hanami based blog a more solid, releasable product!
  • This week, I have been working to get in to a new schedule. Previously, I would finish work whenever I felt I was done with what I was working on (before 6pm, though), then the rest of my evening routine would start (exercise, cook, eat, relax). Now, we have a wee one who we’re trying to get in to some kind of evening habit, so bath and setting times that differ wildly won’t work all that well 😆. I think I did ok for a first week, was only late once, but thankfully we had leftovers, so the cook-block could be smaller.
  • We watched the new Alien movie this week. I loved the style of this one! Glowing plastic dashboard buttons, green CRTs and hi-top Reeboks — what’s not to love! I even didn’t mind the CG Ian Holm, though it took me way too long to work out it was him.
  • I’ve been reading Ghibliotheque this week as well, though spending way too long staring at the amazing artwork as I go.
  • While I was on leave my brother and his partner came up to Canberra to visit the kiddo. My brother's partner was a Canberra native, so they spent a lot of the week (while they weren't hanging out with us) visiting all the places they used to hang out and work to see how much they had changed. While we were hanging out, I realised a couple of things. Family is a good way to force yourself out of the house with a new baby, and doing it every day was good prep for how exhausting work was going to be. And, that I do miss being able to just text family and be ~20 mins away from seeing them for a chat in person. But you know what they say about distance, so maybe this would all be different if we were actually living in the same city 😆.
  • I have been working to finish all of the side missions in Cyberpunk 2077, just on 4 years later. I keep finding myself wanting to go back in to that world for a few hours here and there (even after I have said I am done), which is why this will be the 5th or 6th time I have re-installed the game. There's just something about how dang nice the game looks. Oh and the netrunner / neuromancer vibes are totally my jam.
