Week notes 77 — Everything, right here, all at once
- It's been a week pals! So far on trend for 2025 😆
- This week I spent a day in Melbourne for work to do some tech strategy planning in person. Super grateful to be able to do it in meatspace — the early start and hasty return to the airport in the evening for Sebastian's evening wind-down was no way near as exhausting as spending 8 hours on a Meet call. The culmination of said workshop was pretty good — it can be tricky to balance maintaining direction with setting off in another direction when there are so many long-running projects going on. Sometimes it can feel hard to not start the new thing and make inroads (thus showing some sort of new progress) when there is so far to go on the old thing, but in many of our cases, actually finishing the old thing is incredibly valuable and so landing on a strategy that supports maintaining momentum should hopefully make planning over the next few months less stressful and painful.
- While I was in Melbourne, our oldest dog Barkly ruptured his Cranial Cruciate Ligament. So upon landing we had to do a quick shuffle (I took the little one and Abby took off to the vet to get the old man checked out). He's going in for surgery on Tuesday (the 21st) and then we'll begin a long rehab process if all goes well. He had been limping around the months prior, but was usually a once off, and was back to himself for a few weeks / months so we didn't put 2 and 2 together. I am hoping that he's able to at least walk again on the injured leg. His days of chasing and jumping are probably over if not numbered, but walking with him is the highlight of every day. He just finds wonder in old thing — as long as it's stinky or had previously hidden food. Like the magic bush behind the bush shelter near our house. It once had a wrapper from a nearby fish and chip joint and we must check it each time we pass in case another one magically appears.
- We also had Mum visiting this weekend which was delightful :D The look on her and Sebastian's faces when they see each other is the greatest. We spent Saturday at NMA checking out the exhibits before heading to Civic for dinner. While we had to balance looking after Barkly and be home in time to give him his meds, everything in Canberra is close enough that we were never all that far away.
- During the week at work, we have been trying to diagnose an issue with one of our ECS instances that periodically balloons in memory usage and causes a flow on of not enqueuing important jobs, that then causes people to be yelled at by PagerDuty. It's one of those things that has had a heap things added to it over time and is a bit of a catchall for every team. So no one really knows how it works or wants to touch it. I did figure out what was causing the issue, and have a plan for next week to consolidate all the things so that we can hopefully return to our regularly scheduled life of ignoring this particular computer.
- We did get a bit of a sleep in this over the weekend, though (thanks Sebastian) — this is what a
wellrested family looks like (don't be jealous).
