Week 95 — Gone fishing

  • It's definitely winter now! The nights are getting so chilly, and the mornings have been foggy, gloomy and cool. There are still some trees thinking it's autumn, and that's fine by me! But it is harder to get up in the mornings, even if it is lighter earlier. The rain has made taking the dogs out less fun, so I have been waiting for the middle of the day to see if things improve. On the plus side, I haven't had to water my garden in a month 😉.

  • I picked up a new keyboard this week. My Das Keyboard 3 is still going strong after 12 years + half chewed (and poorly soldered USB cable, thanks Barkly 😂) but I wanted something less clacky. So I picked up a NuPhy Node75 with these super quiet Blush Nano switches. It's so nice to type on and it's no longer super obvious when I am talking to Claude in meetings 😉

  • The other week I called Mum on FaceTime with Sebby just before bed so he could say goodnight. On the call, she showed him a beanie she had made him and he wanted it. He was reaching at the screen trying to get it — babbling "hat" as he reached out. But, of course, that's not how technology works yet — maybe in his lifetime though? In any case, it arrived in the mail this week and he loves his new hat — complete with ears.

  • On Sunday Sebby, Clare and I went to Questacon to check out Mini Q. In our search, we went through most of the other galleries — much to Sebastian's delight 🥰. It was awesome seeing him take in everything — the science-things, the people, the other kids, the atmosphere. He was so confident going between activities, playing with blocks, trying to climb up on stools to get to the bigger tables — all of it. But after the 3rd or 4th gallery (and we still haven't made it to Mini Q yet), we were getting closer to lunch, and the kids were getting louder. The overwhelm was real 😂. Once we arrived at Mini Q there was a brief respite while we milled around outside watching Sebby explore the entryway. The space is so well setup. Everything is padded (even the low ceilings, thank you), and the activities are so thoughtful and interesting. There are only a few screens of pretty static images, and the rest is fairly hands on and tactile play. There's even a little indoor river that Sebastian was having a good time fishing for pingpong balls in — and a real plastic fish 🥰. But of course, in a room designed for 0-6 year olds, there's a lot of energy needing to be dissipated — and it very quickly got very loud and busy 😂. Sebastian managed to maintain his focus, and not get too caught up in all the goings on, but there was a moment where one kid squealed and that set off a chain reaction 😂. To decompress, we had lunch together outside, and that was lovely 🥰
