Week of 29 January

  • Busy week this week ahead of our work's offsite next week, trying to get a bunch crammed in before a week of interruptions, oh and it's performance review time πŸŒ€
  • I made a joke just before I started painting and doing up my office, that once I finished, we'd have to move. Well as it turns out the place we want to move to is soon to be vacant, and we have been planning a move there over the weekend. The trouble is, that similar to a software project, we're generating a bunch of scope that we probably won't be able to handle in the short window we have to move, so now it's a matter of working out what the critical things are, and then deferring the other things until such time as we can find someone to do those things. In an case, I am excited! The place is super close to a local shopping strip, such that we could probably walk to the market if we so wanted β€” which would be kinda nice in a pinch!
  • Speaking of office updates, I picked up a new plant over the weekend from echΓ© out in Queanbeyan It's been a while since we've been out that way, but it's good to see little shops like this popping up in unconventional places and doing well! Especially since otherwise the rents would be stupidly high, driving up the prices of a fairly simple pot + plant operation.

  • I've nearly finished the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, and, it's been a bit of a slog! The exploration and the mechanics are amazing. The combat is fluid and engaging, the backtracking is enjoyable. But the bugs, the bugs are killing me! So many times have I accepted a quest from someone only for the game to become unresponsive, with both Sargon and the quest giver just staring at each other. But, fine, whatever, kill the app, restart the PS5 and come back, and things usually work. What's frustrating though, is this has happened on a couple of the late-game boss-fights too! One in particular, I think I was on my 10th or 15th attempt, with no healing left and I just managed to sneak in an arrow at the last second, only to have to re-do the whole encounter, 4 or 5 more times.
  • I have been working on some updates to the blog's auto-tagging features. Currently, when a post contains some text in the body or in the title, the system can tag it appropriately. The extension I am working on, is to include images in this too. This works already if an image has alt text, but I think I want to handle the cases where the alt text doesn't explicitly call out the objects in the scene, or uses a word that isn't setup for auto-tagging. For example, the image above doesn't explicitly call out that there's a dog in the photo, so the auto-tagger won't tag the post with "dog". This is still a bit of a work in progress, and may really only be valuable for photo posts, but only more experiments will say for sure :)
